The chairman of the Sepang International Circuit, playing host for this weekend's F1 Malaysian Grand Prix, believes the Singapore Grand Prix won't be a competition for Malaysia. Instead, he expects fans to visit both races.
Sepang International Circuit chairman Datuk Mokhzani Tun Dr Mahathir said at a Malaysian morning show on Monday he expects the upcoming race at Sepang to be even more exciting that Sunday's Australian Grand Prix. The excitement should attract over 100,000 Formula 1 fans to the track near Kuala Lumpur.
In September Singapore will play host to the very first Singapore Grand Prix. The location is only a few hours driving away from the Sepang track, but Mahathir believes the new race will help the Malaysian Grand Prix rather than being a competitor. "I don't see that the two races in Malaysia and Singapore would compete against each other. Instead, I would think that the fans would want to see both races … one at the start of the season in Sepang and the other at the tail end of the season in Singapore," he said.
