McLaren drivers summoned by stewards
22 March 2008 / Results / PhotosHeikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton have been summoned by race stewards at Sepang, after Nick Heidfeld and Fernando Alonso complained that they had been blocked at the end of qualifying by the two McLarens.
The moment in question came towards the end of qualifying when both McLarens had completed their flying laps and were slowing on their in-laps to conserve fuel. However, other drivers including Heidfeld and Alonso were still completing their flying laps and complained they had been impeded.
Heidfeld said, "The first corners of my last lap went smoothly, but then there were several cars driving very slowly on their in-laps. Apparently they had no informaiton that qualfying was still going on and before turn four I lost a lot of time because both McLarens were cruising on the racing line."
If found guilty the FIA could either take away the McLaren drivers' best lap times, or impose a grid penalty of up to ten places.
