Alonso realistic about Renault pace

24 March 2008

Fernando Alonso was realistic about where Renault stands in the current F1 order after a hard fought drive earned him nothing more than eighth and a single point in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

"It went pretty much as we expected," Alonso told the Spanish AS newspaper. "We knew that finishing in the top eight was going to be difficult and if it hadn't been for Massa's retirement we wouldn't have made it, that's the reality of the situation - no surprise."

"In a normal race, with no retirements we were ninth in qualifying and eighth in the race, that's all we can expect in that situation," he added.

"In Barcelona we will have some improvements for the car, but so will all the other teams so the championship this yea is going to stay pretty much the same," Alonso concluded.
