McLaren team boss Ron Dennis emplored observers not to judge his team's absolute performance level or its chances of fighting for the championship after his two drivers finished third and fifth in the Malaysian Grand Prix.
"We don't really know what our exact pace is at the moment," Dennis told reporters after the Malaysian race. "We won't really know how competitive our car is truly until after the Spanish rand Prix. As I've said before the first three races are very different circuits and don't reflect the true pace of the car. Barcelona will be where it is all at."
The Spanish Grand Prix is two rounds away, due to be held on 27 April.
Speaking about the Malaysian race Dennis added, "If this is our worst weekend of the year then we'll take it. The only drama we had in the race was the seized wheel nut - that effectively took away third and fourth place for that. But leading both championships is not a bad place to be in at this point in the season."
McLaren leads BMW in the constructors championship by five points and Hamilton leads Raikkonen and Heidfeld in the drivers' chase by three points.
