Renault rubbishes Alonso lift rumours

07 April 2008

Renault has moved to rubbish rumours that suggested Fernando Alonso may have brake-tested, or at very least lifted off the throttle in front of arch-rival Lewis Hamilton, causing the McLaren driver to run into the rear of his Renault and lose his front wing early in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

"We were running very close and maybe he didn't realise how close we were," Alonso said. "He hit my rear wing while he was trying to recover places. Pat Symonds told me about the rumour that I lifted, and he has now printed the car data to show everyone. It is total rubbish, but what can I do?"

Symonds showed the telemetry to reporters at Bahrain and it clearly showed Alonso was flat out on the throttle only throughout that section and did nothing unusal.
