Montreal improves track safety

The organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix are going to make some changes in the hairpin area where BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica suffered from a horrible crash in last year's race at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit.

Kubica escaped with only a minor concussion and a sprained ankle, but racing officials asked the turn be made safer for the Grand Prix next month. Race organizers are now in the process of installing a new wall adjacent to the track. "If the same accident occurs this year, the car will slide on that wall instead of hitting the wall in the middle of the hairpin," Francois Dumontier, executive vice-president of GPF1 told the Canadian Press. "We've added a safety fence."

The organizers are also making changes to the paddock. There will be new offices for the engineers, kitchens for the support staff and private bathrooms for each F1 team. "The teams will be pleased to see new equipment for them in the paddock," Dumontier said.
