Hamilton hopes strategy will save McLaren

Hamilton hopes strategy will save McLaren

Lewis Hamilton was left hoping that he and McLaren have opted for a better race strategy than Ferrari after the British driver ended up third on the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix, behind Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen.

"I think we did a solid job and for sure we anticipated we'd be a bit quicker, but we were surprised by Ferrari's pace," Hamilton said. "Both my laps were good, I was happy with how the session went and had no problems with traffic. We lost a little bit in the last sector, but I pulled together two solid laps and the time just wasn't there. I'm happy with the strategy we're on and tomorrow we'll see just how well we'll fare."

"We lose out a lot on traction in sector two, just before going into the tunnel and the chicane and in the final sector a couple of corners we can't brake quite as late as we want to which is probably the difference," he added. "In practice doing a lap was quite easy and I could push harder if I wanted to, so we were happy with the pace. In Q3 we just had to be more on the limit and the car wasn't quite as happy, but we'll have to push in the race."
