McLaren boss Ron Dennis was a happy man on Sunday evening, not only because his driver Lewis Hamilton took a much needed victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, but because he believe McLaren now has the pace to really fight Ferrari.
"It's just great," Dennis said. "I'm so happy for the team and for Lewis. It was a brilliant strategy switch that really paid off. Hitting the wall didn't help, though!"
"I'm disappointed for Heikki because we had the pace for a one-two, but there's pace and the opportunity to come," he added. "We switched Heikki to dry tyres a bit earlier than Lewis to see if it was the right time, but we didn't want to take any other risks because you never know when the safety car is going to come out."
McLaren has moved up to second in the constructors' championship, one point ahead of BMW and 16 points behind Ferrari.
