Kubica and Heidfeld take the double for BMW
08 June 2008 / Results / PhotosRobert Kubica scored his very first victory in Formula 1 on Sunday. The Polish driver finished ahead of team mate Nick Heidfeld making it not only BMW's first victory since the car manufacturer entered F1, but also taking the double. David Coulthard finished third. Championship candidates Raikkonen and Hamilton failed to finish. Hamilton crashed into the back of Raikkonen at the end of the pitlane as the lights were still turned red.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve can always guarantee you a spectacular round in the Formula One championship. It wouldn't be any different this season. While the race got off to an easy start it ended for some with a big bang. Championship candidates Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica pitted at the same time while the safety car was out. While Raikkonen and Kubica saw the red lights at the end of the pitlane just on time it was Lewis Hamilton who failed and was unable to avoid Raikkonen's Ferrari. It was the end of the race for both men.

Due to the pitstops from the top six drivers Nick Heidfeld took the lead ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Kazuki Nakajima. It soon became clear though Robert Kubica was in the best position as the Polish driver had already pitted. Heidfeld managed to build up a gap and after a pitstop the German was still leading the race. After his first pitstop though Heidfeld's laps weren't as good compared to his team mate and so Kubica was closing in quiet quickly. Kubica managed to overtake Heidfeld and managed to build up a big gap, large enough to keep the lead after his pitstop.
David Coulthard scored his first points of the season as the Scotsman finished third behind the BMW Sauber drivers. Timo Glock scored his best result in Formula 1 as the German finished fourth, ahead of Felipe Massa and Jarno Trulli. Rubens Barrichello finished seventh ahead of Sebastian Vettel.
