Hamilton leads opening practice

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton was this morning's fastest driver out on track at the Hockenheimring. The Briton was just ahead of team mate Heikki Kovalainen and Felipe Massa. Alonso ended fourth.

This morning's 90-minute free practice session got under way at a wet track. Most drivers were out on track on full wets but soon switched to intermediates. After 60 minutes the track was mostly dry and the lap times dropped rapidly.

There were yellow flags when Robert Kubica flew off in the third sector. The BMW Sauber F1 driver lost control of his car and went through the gravel into the tyres barriers. He could get out of his car without any trouble though fortunately.

Sebastien Bourdais' session also ended early when the Frenchman's car gave up on him. He had to park his car behind the tyre barriers.
