Heikki Kovalainen was Saturday morning's fastest man out on track. The McLaren driver completed his fastest lap in 1.15.621 at the Hockenheimring. Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton ended in second and third respectively.

Saturday's 60-minute free practice session took place at a completely dry track with temperatures around 23 degrees Celsius. The session was dominated for most of the time by McLaren and Ferrari.

There were technical problems for Robert Kubica. The Polish BMW Sauber F1 driver drove slowly back to his pitbox with ten minutes left in the session. His session ended early as the team will not try to prepare his car for this afternoon's qualifying session.

Adrian Sutil caused yellow flags when the Force India driver flew off in Turn 1. He ended in the gravel but managed to get his car back on track to drive back to his pitbox.
