Alonso happy but concerned about race pace

20 July 2008

Fernando Alonso was happy with his qualifying performance on Saturday, getting his Renault into fifth on the grid, but the former world champion admitted concerns about his team's race pace.

"I'm very happy and it's a nice surprise as we came to qualifying with some doubts about the performance and some concern," Alonso said. "The set-up wasn't totally right all weekend and the wind is affecting us a lot and we were a bit inconsitent in pace. The last lap in qualifying was perfect and I was able to get the most out of the car."

"Race pace is one of our biggest problems, we slide too much so we wear the tyres more than the others and at the end of the stints we can't be any quicker," he added. "I think it's still a concern tomorrow but hopefully we can keep this performance to the end."
