Ferrari hoping to avoid penalty

24 August 2008

Ferrari is hopeful of avoiding any penalty that could cost Felipe Massa his victory in the European Grand Prix, after the Brazilian was being investigated for an unsafe release from his second pit stop.

"If we look back at the last races we've seen similar pit exits where stewards haven't taken action," Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni said. "Sutil kept his line and didn't lose time so I would be very surprised if we are penalised, but lets wait and see what the stewards decide."

Colajanni also insisted that it was not a fault in any Ferrari system which caused Kimi Raikkonen to pull away from his second pit stop before the fuel hose had been removed. "The system is not automatic, the lights are controlled by human beings," he insisted. "Maybe Kimi started a bit earlier while the nozzle was still locked in and the guy came with that."

A Ferrari mechanic was pulled to the ground and taken on a stretcher to the medical centre for treatment.
