Vettel celebrates 'incredible' and 'unbelievable' pole

Sebastian Vettel was clearly over the moon having secured his, and Scuderia Toro Rosso's maiden F1 pole position in very difficult conditions at Monza.

"It's just unbelievable and incredible," Vettel said. "I was joking with my engineers that if it was wet we'd have to go for pole position. There was so much water out there you never knew what to expect especially at Ascari, just needed to be lucky not to lose the car."

"I never dreamed of being on pole and in Italy with two Italian teams, everyone knows Ferrari, but now hopefully people know the smaller Toro Rosso too," he added. "We had wet practice yesterday and I didn't feel very comfortable an overnight we found just the right thing. After practice this morning I felt better and very comfortable in the wet, great balance and I think in these conditions where you feel comfortable you can do really well."

"There was no real secret, we just did the best we could do in running and simply getting used to the conditions out there," Vettel went on. "It always depended how much rain there was out there. In Q2 I set my lap quite early, and put it all together and towards the end of the session there was more rain, so those who waited to do their lap had bad luck. The weather forecast was changing every five minutes so we were just out there do some running and make the most of the conditions."
