Digital flags to debut in Singapore

Digital flags to debut in Singapore

26 September 2008

In the first night race in the history of Formula One, the Singapore Grand Prix, Formula One fans will witness another innovation. Unlike other races, there won't be marshals responsible for the flag signals but an electronic system. This measure is supposed to increase the visibility of the flags under the floodlights in the city of Singapore.

It goes without saying that there will still be marshals watching the race action in Singapore - but there will be only a few situations when they will be responsible for actually waving the flags: To increase visibility, electronic signal boards providing the drivers with the necessary track information will replace the conventional flags over the race weekend held in the Southeast Asian metropolis.

A yellow light, for instance, will warn the Formula 1 drivers that there is a dangerous situation on the track, blue announces an overtaking manoeuvre and green signals the all-clear. Consequently, the F1 drivers will see waved flags only if a practice session, qualifying or the race is red-flagged - or when taking the chequered flag when crossing the finish line of the Singapore Grand Prix.
