Lewis Hamilton completed the fastest lap in Friday morning's first free practice session. The Briton ended ahead of championship rival Felipe Massa. Raikkonen and Kovalainen ended third and fourth at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The penultimate round in the 2008 Formula 1 championship got under way at 10.00 am local time at the Shanghai International Circuit. The session enjoyed perfect weather conditions with temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius and partly clouded.

Fans in the grandstands saw McLaren and Ferrari dominate the session but in the last 30 minutes of the 90-minutes session Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets in Shanghai.

There were hardly any incidents this morning. Nick Heidfeld had a moment and so did Toyota's Jarno Trulli as he spun. The most awkward moment was for Nelson Piquet. As the Brazilian entered the pitlane he ran wide into the gravel where the world saw Lewis Hamilton finish his race in 2007. Piquet did manage to continue though and make it back to his pitbox.
