McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix from pole position. The Briton will be joined on the front row by reigning champion Kimi Raikkonen. Right behind them Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso will be lining up on the second row.

With just two races to go in the 2008 Formula 1 championship Lewis Hamilton has scored an important pole position in his fight for the championship title. The Briton will start Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix from pole position while his main rival, Felipe Massa, will start from third. Robert Kubica missed out on Q3 and will start Sunday's race from 12th position.

In Saturday's first qualifying session there weren't any major surprises apart from Rubens Barrichello who managed to make it into Q2. At Honda both Barrichello and Button struggled with the car at the Shanghai International Circuit but the Brazilian got the maximum out of the car to make it through to the next session. David Coulthard will be disappointed not making it into Q2.

In the second qualifying session Robert Kubica failed to finish in the top ten. Kubica complained on Friday about the balance of the car and was less satisfied with his car than team mate Nick Heidfeld who did make it into the final qualifying session.

In the final 10-minutes qualifying session it was a battle between the McLaren and Ferrari drivers. In the end Lewis Hamilton pipped the Ferrari drivers by three tenths of a second. Hamilton's team mate Heikki Kovalainen saw both Ferrari drivers and Fernando Alonso end in front of him.
