Di Grassi confident of F1 race drive

24 October 2008

Renault test driver Lucas Di Grassi says he has a good chance of graduating to an F1 race seat in 2009. The Brazilian has been part of Renault's Driver Development Programme for the past five years and it has been suggested he may replace Nelson Piquet Jr if Renault decides not to retain him for 2009.

"I want to take a step up in my career and become an official F1 driver," Di Grassi told Reuters. "There's a good chance that I'll be in F1 next year. My first option is Renault because they've been investing in my career, but I'd be happy with any other team."

"Renault has an option and it is up to them," he added. "They have the possibility of extending my contract so I'm waiting for their decision to see if it will be with Renault or if I'll have permission to negotiate with other teams."
