Ferrari threatens to quit F1
27 October 2008Ferrari has threatened to quit Formula One if the FIA pushes ahead with its plans to introduce a standard engine scheme for all the teams.
The FIA today confirmed that it is still pressing ahead with inviting potential suppliers of a standard F1 engine to tender for the deal. It was a move that stunned many given the progress made at last week's FIA-FOTA meeting between the governing body and F1 teams.
An this evening, Ferrari has dropped a bombshell following a meeting of its board.
"Whilst reiterating its wholehearted commitment to a substantial and needed reduction in costs in Formula 1, starting with propulsion, the Ferrari Board of Directors expressed strong concerns regarding plans to standardise engines as it felt that such a move would detract from the entire raison of a sport with which Ferrari has been involved continuously since 1950, a raison d'etre based principally on competition and technological development," a statement issued by Ferrari this evening read.
"The Board of Directors expressed the opinion that should these key elements be diminished, it would have to re-evaluate, with its partners the viability of continuing its presence in the sport," it concluded.
