Christian Klien would have loved to put in the odd extra shift during this Formula One season. However, strict regulations mean the official test and reserve driver for the BMW Sauber F1 Team had too few sorties in the cockpit for his liking. For this reason, the Austrian is looking forward to the winter break, for which a comprehensive test programme is planned.
"I'll be behind the wheel for six days before Christmas," says Christian. "Unfortunately, during the season it will be similar to this year again, and I simply won't be able to get into the car as often as used to be the case."
One of the main focuses of the winter tests will be the aerodynamic components, which are to be reduced by about 30 percent, and the reintroduced slick tyres. "The cars will be completely different. This is a major restructuring of the regulations - the largest for years," confirms Christian.
In addition to this, technical innovations such as the Kinetic Energy Recovery System, KERS, must also be integrated into the package for the 2009 season. "It goes without saying that every team is trying to come to terms with all this as quickly as possible. I am certain that we at BMW are furthest on with our preparations," says Christian.
"Not all teams will have KERS next year - it is optional. No team has been successful with it on the track so far. We will really start getting to grips with it during the winter tests after Brazil. Anyone starting the season with KERS will certainly have an advantage."
