Piquet fears Grosjean for next season

30 October 2008

Renault F1 driver Nelson Piquet has said that the team's current test driver, Romain Grosjean, could replace him at Renault next season. Piquet admits his team will be keen to sign a French driver.

Romain Grosjean, born in Switserland but racing with a French license, enjoyed a solid debut season in the GP2 main series this year. Speaking about Renault's drivers for next season Piquet said at a news conference in Brazil: "I think Renault are in need, it's been a few years since they don't have a French driver.

"There's a driver from Renault's Driver Development Programme, Grosjean, who had a reasonably good year in GP2. There is this pressure from the president. But at the end it's going to be a decision from the whole team, from Briatore, from everybody. For me, actually, it's only a matter of waiting."
