Honda team boss Ross Brawn believes his outfit can realistically aim to be on a level with the BMW team in 2009, despoite a dismal 2008 season in which the team finished ninth of ten teams left at the end of the year, having scored 14 points.
"The potential for a team in our position to move upwards depends on the job we do and what everyone else does," Brawn told Autosport. "I recall years at Ferrari where we had fairly modest cars but everyone else was doing a terrible job, and I can remember years where we had fantastic cars and so did everyone else, so it was a real challenge."
"It's difficult to predict, so with the new regulations it's all going to go every which way and then it will start to come together again," he added. "The grid in Q1 was one second from the main group and that's with this engine disparity. We have the resources we need and I think it would be overoptimistic to think we can challenge for the championship next year but we have certainly got to be looking a lot, lot better than at the moment."
"For me the reference point is BMW, and the job they've done is impressive," he went on. "I think if we as a team achieve the competitiveness BMW manage to we will be quite pleased."
