Coulthard doubts Hamilton's McLaren commitment

11 November 2008

Retired F1 driver David Coulthard says he believes Lewis Hamilton's would not hold up his pledge of loyalty to McLaren for the rest of his career if the team was not competitive.

"In terms of trying to achieve wins, it would be silly of him to stay there if the car wasn't performing," Coulthard told BBC Radio Five Live. "He wants to win races."

"You'd expect him to say he'd commit now because they're on top of the world right now," he added. "He's a young guy with a remarkable record in his two F1 seasons. I don't think he needs to talk about the future beyond enjoying this championship win at the moment and his title defence next year."

"None of us knows what the future holds - how many marriages do you see that start out with 'he's my soulmate, I'm with him for life,' only for five years later that to change to 'time to move on'," Coulthard concluded.
