Webber breaks leg in road incident

22 November 2008

Red Bull driver Mark Webber has broken his right leg after being involved in a road incident while riding his bicycle in Australia.

Webber was taking part in one of the cycling parts of his Pure Tasmania Challenge when he was hit, head-on by a car.

Webber was airlifted to hospital where a broken right leg is his only serious injury. He has since undergone an operation where surgeons inserted a pin to the broken bone and will now begin recovery.

Webber is expected to stay in hospital for another two to three days before being discharged. Providing there are no complications he should be fit again in time for the start of the season in March, but will likely to miss out on the majority of winter testing.

Sergeant Jon Ford, of Tasmania Police was quoted by the BBC: "We received reports of a collision between a bicycle and a motor vehicle on the Fortescue Bay Road on the Tasman Peninsula. "He was airlifted from the scene by helicopter and taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he is now being treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries.

"He suffered a broken leg and other injuries and is reported to be in a stable condition."
