Briatore targets championship title in 2009

01 December 2008

Flavio Briatore believes the Renault Formula 1 team will be able to win races on a regular basis again next season as the flamboyant Italian aims for the championship title next season. The Renault F1 team finished fourth in the constructors' championship this season, right behind Ferrari, McLaren and BMW Sauber.

Briatore now hopes the team is able to offer Fernando Alonso a championship winning car and with doing so the Italian hopes to retain Alonso for another season at the team. "We have to offer him (Alonso) a championship winning car," Briatore told German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport. "We aim to win the championship with Fernando in 2009 and I believe we are already well under way for next year."

Fernando Alonso won the championship with Renault in 2005 and 2006.
