At the brand-new Algarve circuit in Portugal Ferrari and McLaren began a three-day test on Monday. It was the first official Formula One test for the Portuguese track. Garry Paffett completed the fastest lap on the first day, while Felipe Massa ended second and ended his day early as the Brazilian didn't feel well.
On a day affected by strong winds, Felipe Massa continued with the work the Ferrari F1 team had initiated last week at Jerez de la Frontera, which centred on an endurance test of the engine and on evaluating a few technical solutions aimed at the forthcoming season, as well as looking into the best set-up on the car, when fitted with the new slick tyres. At Ferrari testing ended ahead of schedule, as Massa was feeling unwell. Up to that point, the Brazilian driver had completed 36 laps, the quickest in a time of 1.32.926. On Tuesday Luca Badoer and Marc Gene will hit the track.

At McLaren Gary Paffett spent the majority of the day in the KERS-equipped 23K McLaren chassis putting further mileage on the electrical unit and 2009-spec front wing. He also carried out some brief running in the 23A in a bid to more accurately assess the set-up required for this new circuit. At McLaren Pedro de la Rosa takes over for the remaining two days of this single-car test in Portugal.
