"Title loss would have damaged Hamilton's reputation"

02 January 2009

Michael Schumacher believes that, had Lewis Hamilton missed out on clinching the Formula 1 title again last year, it would have been extremely bad for his reputation. In 2007 Hamilton missed out on the F1 title to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in the final round by just one point as opposed to beating Felipe Massa last year by the same margin.

"If Lewis had lost the title again in the final round of the season it would have really damaged his reputation," Schumacher told Italian newspaper La Repubblica. "If it happens to you once it is an anecdote but when it happens to you twice it is starting to become a habit. If we saw the championship title slip through his fingers again in the final round it could have been an ill omen for the rest of his career."

Schumacher experienced his own share of last race titles traumas during his driving career, particuarly the loss of the 1997 and 1998 championships to Jacques Villeneuve and Mika Hakkinen. In 2006 Michael lost a seemingly almost certain title victory at the penultimate round following an engine blow up whilst leading in Japan.
