Hulkenberg optimistic over future

26 February 2009

Williams test and reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg is optimistic over his chances of securing a race drive with the team next year.

Hulkenberg, 21, first got his hands on a Formula One steering wheel in December 2007 by joining Williams for a test in Jerez. His performance was good enough to secure a full-time testing position for 2008. Managed by Willi Weber, long-time associate of the Schumacher brothers, the German clinched the F3 Euroseries title last year and is currently third in the GP2 Asia Series.

"I want to stay with Williams in 2010 and race for them," explained Hulkenberg to the official F1 website. New rules for the 2009 season have limited testing in a bid to cut costs, which came as bad news to test drivers; Hulkenberg continued: "The testing ban this year makes it very hard for drivers wanting to break into Formula One because we cannot get enough experience with the car or team. It's a fact of life though, so we just have to deal with it."

Were Nico to succeed in claiming a race drive for next season, he would be the sixth German on the grid alongside Heidfeld, Vettel, Rosberg, Glock and Sutil.
