McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa joined the other teams at the Jerez test yesterday to spend his Sunday concentrating on tyre development for the 2010 season, in which both tyre warming blankets and refuelling during races will be banned.
The Catalan driver completed 94 laps of the circuit under cloudy skies before light rainfall came later in the afternoon. With the 2010 tyres onboard, the McLaren finished 2.8 seconds off the leading pace of Sebastian Vettel's 2009-spec Red Bull. The day yielded positive data for both the team and tyre manufacturer although a problem with an oil pressure sensor brought a premature end to Pedro's day, ten minutes early.
Speaking in Jerez, de la Rosa commented that "Running without tyre blankets makes it harder to get heat into the tyre - but that's the objective for next year and that's why Bridgestone will supply the teams with different compounds. We managed a lot of laps today and the work with the tyres was very positive."
As well the lack of tyre warmers, the lack of refuelling in races next year will mean having to develop more durable tyres, able to sustain the added weight to the car.
