Williams technical director Sam Michael is confident that moveable wings on this year's Formula One cars will result in an improved show with a larger amount of overtaking. Other changes for 2009 also include the simplifying of bodywork regulations and the reintroduction of slick tyres.
The new moveable frong wing device will allow drivers to adjust the aerofoil a maximum of twice per lap, up or down by six degrees from the position in which it started the Grand Prix. "It was something that we thought would be a little tuning aid," Michael told Autosport, "But having seen the first test in Portugal, the ability to follow other cars through high speed corners was massively improved."
Michael's opinion was reflected by BMW driver Nick Heidfeld, who discovered the new overtaking ability when presented with an opportunity to follow another car in the Bahrain test two weeks ago.
