Brawn still waiting for FIA engine approval

09 March 2009

The new Brawn GP team is still waiting for an official tender of its Mercedes engine from F1's governing body the FIA, as the team begins testing in Spain this morning. The Ross Brawn-led team takes over for 2009 following Honda's bowing out of the sport in early December.

Brawn GP is now the third team on the grid powered by the German manufacturer, who also supplies customer engines to Force India as well as the McLaren factory team. "Both we and Brawn GP are satisfied with the agreement. All arrangements by both sides were professionally developed and well respected and implemented," Norbert Haug, Vice President of Mercedes-Benz motorsport, told German publication Auto Motor und Sport. "I think Ross Brawn and Nick Fry, as well as the rest of the team, have all done a very good job. Ross knows how a team competes, something he has already demonstrated more than enough in his career. I would not be surprised if we see some positive results from them."

As Brawn GP tests in Spain this week, Haug also gave his opinions on the current situation involving the teams in F1: "Brawn is waiting for the approval of the engine deal from FIA, and hopefully will get it. We believe that the continued existence of the team is very important; especially during the current economic climate. It is important to make sure that Formula One should not only have eighteen cars lining up on the grid." As it stands, F1 has twenty cars in the 2009 line-up with the US Grand Prix Engineering (USGPE) outfit - formerly USF1 - also expected to be joining next year.
