The Toro Rosso team never wanted Jenson Button as a driver for the 2009 season, the team has admitted. Following the departure of Sebastian Vettel for sister team Red Bull Racing, a vacancy was available until the Faenza-based squad eventually confirmed that Sebastien Bourdais would be retained to drive alongside Swiss newcomer Buemi.

"To be honest, Jenson was never a choice for us," team principal Franz Tost told reporters at the test session in Spain. "As far as I know, he had an agreement with Honda and therefore there were never any negotiations with Jenson Button or his management."
Button, who is more than thankful to everybody at his new-branded Brawn GP team, following the effort that has gone into the project, has already admitted that he would not want to be anywhere else: "If something like this had happened in five or six years then I might have walked away, but that's not my aim at the moment."
