The McLaren team has taken to the track as Jerez testing continues for its second day, following just a single installation lap from Hamilton on Sunday. The Woking-based team immediately grabbed the attention of onlookers this morning (Monday) by running a new monitoring device on the car's diffuser.
As the diffuser supports rear end grip of the car, it is highly likely that the component is measuring airflow to and at the rear of the car; results from this test will be vitally important in McLaren's development of the MP4-24, especially following the introduction of their latest aerodynamic package in Barcelona last week, which includes new triangular 'cut-outs' in the car's floor which are specifically designed to aid airflow to the rear of the vehicle.
Diffusers have been at the centre of attention recently as a result of new rules defining requirements for the 2009 season; both the Toyota and Williams teams have already been cleared by the FIA after Renault Team Principal Flavio Briatore questioned their legality, with the Brawn team also sporting a radically shaped diffuser at the rear of their BGP 001.
