Sam Michael, Williams Technical Director, has slammed any rumours that his team's car may be illegal as the new season approaches. The Toyota-powered FW31, along with the Brawn and Toyota teams' chassis, has received criticism over its rear diffuser in that its design may be doing more than just taking advantage of a loophole in the 2009 regulations.

The Australian was adamant to cease speculation first raised by Renault Team Principal, Flavio Briatore: "Our team is very much within the regulations," Michael explained to The Mirror, "I don't know what all the fuss is about."
There are worries that a row could break out over the issue at this weekend's Australian Grand Prix; under such circumstances it would be the decision of the event's stewards as to whether the cars in question are within the bounds of the rules.
"Rather than putting their hands up and saying 'We didn't think of it because we weren't looking at the rules hard enough', people are complaining," Michael concluded.
