Former champion John Surtees is surprised that the Brawn GP team elected to retain compatriot Jenson Button for the upcoming season, claiming that the Frome-born driver must up his game in any F1 car he drives if he is to compete competitively at the top.

Surtees himself fought to the 1964 title for Ferrari by beating Graham Hill's BRM by a single point, and explained that Button must improve, despite having had an underperforming car for the last two seasons. "Sebastian Vettel is an example of a real driver," Surtees told The Mirror. "Look at Button - frankly, I wouldn't have confirmed him with the team.
"If you don't give 100 per cent, even when the car is not good, you have to be sacked - you can't just be good when you have a good car."
