FIA reveals weights of cars

28 March 2009 / Results / Photos

F1's governing body has released information on the weights of all cars following qualifying; now common practice under new regulations, the publically-known car weights will allow fans - as well as rival teams - to have an idea of the amount of fuel carried by each driver, and could see competitors altering race strategies in order to outsmart others.

The information, taken by the FIA in the secure Parc Fermé area at the end of the session, have an interesting read: perhaps most worrying for nine teams is that the first and second placed Brawn GP cars qualified with a significantly larger amount of fuel onboard than the majority of those who qualified in the top ten.

Also, Robert Kubica's sudden pace in the BMW is clearly due to a significant lack of fuel, and World Champion Lewis Hamilon is also fuelled lightly for the start of the race; it is very possible, therefore, that the pairing could be starting the Grand Prix with the Super Soft Bridgestone Potenza tyres, which give higher grip that the Medium compounds.

Post-qualifying car weights:

1 - Jenson Button / Brawn = 664.5kg
