Lewis Hamilton narrowly made it through to Q2 in Melbourne, only to remain in the garage and not return to the track and an attempt for the final knock-out round; Hamilton faces a gearbox problem and thus the Briton was unable to continue in qualifying.

The team will do whatever they can now to fix the problem in Hamilton's car. Speaking about the problem Hamilton told BBC's 5 live: "There was no more drive in the gearbox, there is an issue there, I don't know what it is, but we are working on fixing it - we will have to fix it or we won't be racing tomorrow."
Whether or not the gearbox-related problem is electrical or mechanical will be another crucial factor towards Hamilton's race; if the problem is electrical is may be possible to fix the device, whereas if mechanical damage has occured it is likely it will be too much to repair before the race; either way, if the gearbox is changed the World Champion will receive a 5-place grid drop for Sunday.
