Piquet spin result of brake failure

Nelson Piquet was disappoined to finish a potentially positive Australian Grand Prix in the Turn 1 gravel trap, particularly as the spin was of no doing of his own. Following Nakajima's accident, the Brazilian was victim of a brake failure which occured at the restart on lap 20.

"I was really happy, because we were lucky enough to gain some positions at the beginning of the race," Piquet explained. "The car was good and I was having a consistent drive, but when the safety car came out I started to have some problems with the brakes. I had a good restart and overtook Nico Rosberg, but when I touched the brakes again they were gone."

Nelsinho, who is in need of a good season in 2009 was fortunate to not collect either other cars or the barrier during the accident. "I spun out and I was lucky I ended up in the gravel, so there was no damage to myself or the car," he continued. "The car was not as competitive as we wanted it to be in the race, but we were still running in the top eight; the Malaysian circuit should suit us better and I'm sure that we can get good result there next week."
