Trulli penalty on the cards

Jarno Trulli's third position has been thrown into doubt after he and World Champion Lewis Hamilton were called to the stewards' office at the end of the Australian Grand Prix, following an incident which took place under the final safety car session of the race.

It is understood that Trulli, who held third during the final laps, lost the position by running wide under safety car condtions, to then retake the positon from Hamilton. The argument involved is whether the Italian, who finished the race third, should have passed the McLaren under full yellow flag and safety cars conditions.

"There is some debate over whether it is a third place for Lewis or not at the moment, given that Trulli fell off and re-passed under the safety car," McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh explained to the BBC. "Lewis had no choice but to go past him, as Trulli was not on the racing circuit.

"Trulli then re-took the place under the safety car, which ordinarily you wouldn't do so I know that the FIA are looking at it at the moment and doubtless we'll have a ruling in due course. That's our position at the moment and we will see what happens in the coming hours."
