Ferrari are behind, says team principal

31 March 2009

Stefano Domenicali has admitted that the Ferrari team are lacking in performace after their below par showing in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. The race turned Formula One on its head as the Brawn team took the spoils with the Italians, along with rivals McLaren, struggling further down the field for the majority of the race.

"Reliability was one big issue but I have to be honest and say that the results of the race were decided by a lack of performance," Domenicali said. "With hindsight, Felipe's car was running on the wrong strategy,

which was maybe too aggressive. With Kimi it was okay in terms of strategy, so we must make a list of priorities. We saw that the Brawn is very fast, strong and consistent; in normal circumstances, without a safety car, they would have flown away - so if we have a target, it is to be up with them."

The team's non-scoring start to the season on Sunday was their worst since 1992, when drivers Jean Alesi and Ivan Capelli retired with engine failures in South Africa. In fact, 2009 is the second consecutive year in which neither Ferrari has finished the Australian Grand Prix, although Kimi Räikkönen picked up a point last year due to the lack of cars which finished the race.
