5-place grid penalty for Barrichello

03 April 2009

Rubens Barrichello has been handed a grid penalty of five positions for the Malaysian Grand Prix, after his Brawn team were required to change his gearbox. Under sporting regulations for 2009, gearboxes must last for four races, and so the Brazilian is now the second driver to be handed a penalty as Sebastian Vettel will be dropped 10 positions for his part in the incident with Robert Kubica in at Albert Park.

The new team, fearing further issues, changed the gearbox of the number 23 car having studied telemetry readouts following the first two timed practice sessions on Friday at Sepang.

As a consequence, Rubens will now be presented with a challenge similar to that of Melbourne last weekend, as sixth position is the best he can hope for on Sunday's grid. The penalty does not completely ruin his chances, however, as he battled back from to second from seventh in Melbourne, having bogged down at the start in last time out.
