The BMW team has elected to continue running the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) on the car of Nick Heidfeld this weekend. The German team has debated whether or not to use the device, having testing both with and without it on Friday, but finally confirmed on Saturday morning that Heidfeld would be running the system for the rest of the weekend.
"We think it will provide a strategical advantage for Nick," explained technical director Willy Rampf "As well as offering a chance for more speed on the straights - with a long run to the first corner, for example - there is a good chance of gaining some places, especially at the start."
The team had had second thoughts over the decision - having run Heidfeld both with and without the system - as Kimi Räikkönen's KERS failed at the end of first practice.
