McLaren could be in more trouble

04 April 2009

The McLaren team could find itself receiving more punishments for its role in the situation which resulted in the team being disqualified from last Sunday's Australian Grand Prix. The Woking-based squad was thrown out of the final results for giving what race stewards described as 'misleading information' in a post-race investigation.

The scenario began to unfold as Jarno Trulli, who ran wide, was passed by Hamilton under safety car conditions in Australia. Shortly after, the Italian retook the McLaren and claimed that the speed of the Mercedes-powered car was slow enough to resemble a technical problem. With Trulli handed a 25-second penalty for passing under the safety car and the saga seemingly over on Sunday evening, race stewards reopened the case in Malaysia.

Trulli was given his place back following an additional enquiry at Sepang, in which the McLaren team found itself disqualified from the first race of the season for presenting information which the stewards described as deliberately 'misleading'. News then followed of the suspension of team manager Dave Ryan as Hamilton made a public apology in Malaysia, stressing that he had been wrongly instructed by the former to change his version of events.

Governing body the FIA is still undecided, however, on whether it will be taking further action against the British team, rather than its driver. "We recognise Lewis's efforts to set the record straight today," a spokesman for the FIA said. "It would appear that he was put in an impossible position. We are now awaiting reports from the FIA observer and stewards before consideration can be given to further investigation of the team's conduct - we cannot rule out the matter being referred to the World Council at this stage."
