McLaren 'lies' a repeat of the past, says Alonso

04 April 2009

Fernando Alonso has hit out at former team McLaren, by claiming that the scenario involving the team in Australia last week was not the first time that the English squad has admitted anything but the truth. Alonso famously fell out with McLaren and Lewis Hamilton when driving for the silver arrows in 2007, before rejoining Renault.

This year's 'McLaren-gate' involves team manager Dave Ryan, who has been suspended by team principal Martin Whitmarsh after the FIA-appointed stewards deemed comments made towards an incident between Hamilton and Jarno Trulli were 'misleading'.

"It reminded me of 2007," Alonso explained to reporters at Sepang. "It's not the first time they've been to see the stewards, and it's not the first time they have lied to the stewards and, sooner or later, they were going to be punished. I read about it on Thursday in the hotel, because I was there all day (out of action with an ear infection) - I switched on the computer and read it. Every time there are decisions taken against other teams you don't care too much and, in this case, it didn't change the result for me so it didn't affect me too much."

Despite remaining calm towards the situation, the Spaniard also reminded journalists of Hungary 2007, the weekend on which the disagreement between himself the team became publically known. "Of course I lost the championship in 2007 by a point, and in Hungary they played a bad trick on me," he briefly added.
