Sébastien Buemi was disappointed to spin out of the Malaysian Grand Prix, having finished seventh to score two points in Australia a week ago. The Swiss newcomer was frustrated to make a mistake in qualifying on Saturday and was looking to make up lost ground until Sunday's rainstorm hit Sepang.
"We were really going well and I think I was seventh or eighth," the Toro Rosso driver recalled. "The plan was to come in on the following lap, but I went off at Turn 5; the wet tyres were completely gone, it was like driving on slicks - I slowed down, but obviously not enough for the amount of water because I spun into the gravel and stalled."
Formula One's only rookie has impressed so far this year by entering the second round of qualifying in Australia before scoring two points and then setting competitive lap times at Sepang during practice this weekend. Although this weekend didn't go according to plan, Sébastien knows that the potential remains: "We were competitive in terms of speed at some stages, running in the top six lap times, even though I was last in the race, after coming in to change the nose," he continued. "I think one of the Force India cars pushed me wide at the exit of the last corner, and I ran over something that broke the front wing." The piece was eventually jettisoned at Turn 2 (seen in the picture sequence above).
"I am disappointed as the spin at the end was my mistake, and it is on days like this that we should have picked up some points."
