Red Bull developing double diffuser

16 April 2009

Adrian Newey is rapidly developing a double diffuser following Wednesday's news that governing body the FIA has labelled those devices used by Brawn, Williams and Toyota as legal. The design genius, previously with Williams and McLaren, will miss this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix in order to work on the project.

"We are working flat-out on a new solution already," said Helmut Marko, a former driver and now advisor to the two Red Bull teams. "As the verdict became official, Adrian immediately cancelled his flight to Shanghai, and will stay in the factory (Milton Keynes, England). If everything goes according to plan, we will have the 'new' car ready for Monaco."

The diffusers, protested against by Ferrari, Renault and BMW as well as Red Bull, contain a space in the middle which allows more air to travel through the car at one time, resulting in greater amount of downforce and grip.

"What angers us is the fact that we had approached Whiting (Charlie Whiting, FIA delegate and race director) for a clarification on a diffuser solution like the one in question and we were told it was illegal, therefore we did not pursue it any further though our design team had similar ideas (pre-season)," Marko continued.

"I wonder what impact this will have on cornering speeds - I assume there will be problems soon when cars are going too fast, and the airflow the double diffuser creates will make overtaking more difficult again, for sure, thus it is against the spirit of the rules agreed in the working groups."
