Buemi makes the top ten

Having been devastated to ruin his best lap in Malaysia a fortnight ago, Sébastien Buemi responded in superlative fashion by making the final phase of qualifying in China. The 21-year-old Swiss rookie, in on only his third Grand Prix weekend, will be starting tenth on a track which he learned only last Friday.

With team-mate Bourdais being eliminated in the first part of the session, his new team-mate went on to Q3 but, knowing it was unlikely he would challenge the front runners, elected to run on the harder of the two Bridgestone tyre compounds available (Medium). "I am really happy to be in Q3, as it's more than I had expected," he said later on. "I don't think I could have got any higher up the order; on low fuel, the car was very good, but we didn't have any new options (softer tyres) left for Q3, so I had to do three flying laps on the prime (harder compound).

"Considering that, we can be satisfied with this. The team has worked really well, doing a fantastic job to improve the car a lot since the start of the season, and today it worked very well. I am now very much looking forward to tomorrow's race,"
