Mark Webber has admitted that he was pleasantly surprised to finish third in qualifying ahead of tomorrow's Chinese Grand Prix. The Australian, who recorded his best qualifying result of the year so far, will start Sunday's race behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.

"I expected it to be a bit tighter," Webber said soon after the session. "We did a very good job; Q2 was strong and the cars are behaving very well so I am pretty happy with it. The work that has gone into it was incredible - it's nice to have both of us on the front rows."

Having entered a freezer at temperatures of less than -100°C (-148°F) as part of his recover programme, Webber had a difficult run up to the start of the season haven't suffered from a broken leg and shoulder in November. "It has been a testing winter for me," he explained. "I wasn't quick in winter testing, my leg was not that straightforward and with the other injuries I had, I've been incredibly determined to get in the best condition I can and best shape possible, to give this youngster (team-mate Vettel) a hard time - so far it is working, and it is working well."
