Lewis Hamilton felt he had let both himself and his team down having suffered from a number of off-track excursions in Shanghai, which included two spins. The World Champion made progress by finishing sixth having started ninth, but was overhauled by his team-mate.
A wet weather meister, Hamilton drove a strong race which featured a spectacular pass on 2007 Champion Kimi Räikkönen, as the McLaren passed the Ferrari around the outside of Turn 7. "It was almost too difficult to drive at the beginning of the race," Hamilton reported. "I found a good pace and had some fun in the opening laps, but unfortunately destroyed my tyres quite early on."
Having lost places shortly after the overtake - due to a spin at Turn 10 - Hamilton also lost cost himself time and a position to Adrian Sutil in the closing stages, with a 360-degree spin on the exit of Turn 16. "I made a few too many mistakes today," he admitted. "It was very slippery, and my front-left tyre was finished long before the end but I still gave it my best; this afternoon was a real struggle but I'm glad I got some points for the team."
After Sutil's crash on lap 52, Lewis eventually finished sixth behind team-mate Heikki Kovalainen which brings his points total to four, and he now lies equal seventh in the championship.
