China: A race of mixed results

20 April 2009

Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix was the sixth to take place at the Shanghai International Circuit, with the inaugural Grand Prix having been in 2004. Since then, however, the track has witnessed a wide variety of different race winners. In fact, no man has yet won twice in China, with Ferrari being the only team to take more than one Grand Prix victory in the People's Republic.

Rubens Barrichello was the first man to take the chequered flag in China for Ferrari in 2004, closely followed home by Jenson Button, now team-mate at Brawn but then B.A.R's leading charger. Usually taking place in October, with the exception of that first race (September), this year saw a change as China hosted the third Grand Prix of the season in April.

In its six years, we've more than a few Shanghai surprises, including Montoya's encounter with a drain cover, Schumacher's last Ferrari win, Hamilton's pit lane off and Vettel's fourth place for Toro Rosso. This year, however, the German took a stunning victory as Red Bull pulled a 1-2 out of the bag. It was yet another magical Shanghai surprise.

Chinese Grand Prix Winners:

2004
- Rubens Barrichello / Ferrari
2005 - Fernando Alonso / Renault
2006 - Michael Schumacher / Ferrari
2007 - Kimi Räikkönen / Ferrari
2008 - Lewis Hamilton / McLaren
2009 - Sebastian Vettel / Red Bull
